Candle Facts and Tips

Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated.

The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed.  The U.S. grows the vast majority of the world’s soybeans, primarily in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.

Soy’s greatest advantage is that it is completely renewable. The only limit to the soy supply is how much is grown. Soy wax is also eco-friendly, American grown, sustainable, and carbon neutral.  Much healthier for you, children, pets, and our environment.

Soy wax candles are cleaner burning. They do not increase the CO2 level in the atmosphere like paraffin candles do.  Meaning they do not produce toxins, carcinogens, or pollutants so they’re less likely to trigger allergies and other potential hazards.  Soy wax also does not produce petrol-carbon soot like you get from petroleum-based paraffin candles, which is unhealthy to breath in.  Over time that soot can discolor your walls & furniture and stain the edges of your carpet.

Soy wax burns cooler which means that you can enjoy your soy wax candle for generally 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle.  Average burn time ranges from approximately 5-7 mins per ounce of wax. Our Travel Tins have approximately 35 hours burn time and our Spa Candles have approximately 50 hours burn time for you to enjoy.

TIPS to fully enjoy your Soyful Aromas candle: 1. Burn candles for the FIRST TIME until the melt pool reaches the container  2. Always trim the wick to 1/4″ before lighting EVERY TIME  3. Do not burn candles for longer than 4 hours at a time  4. Do not burn candles in drafty areas

Soy wax holds more fragrance on a by-weight basis, meaning soy wax is limited in how much saturation is used. Please don’t be fooled by soy candles that advertise “triple scented” – there is no such thing.  Compared to paraffin wax, soy wax has a higher by-weight basis, therefore soy candles produce a much stronger and more pleasant scent than paraffin wax candles.  Also due to the lower melting point of soy wax (the wax itself doesn’t get as hot), there is a larger liquid wax pool around the candle wick that helps the fragrance evaporate into the atmosphere.  You’ll be pleased to know that Soyful Aromas uses the maximum concentration of fragrance, so that you will experience a nicely scented candle when it’s lit and when it’s not.

All wicks are made from natural flat cotton threads interwoven with paper threads.  Our wicks do not contain zinc or any other metals.

The updraft of hot gases from combustion hinders diffusion of air into the jar and that starves the flame of oxygen. The key for a perfect burn is the wick maintenance.   Also burning a candle for longer periods of time than recommended can cause a wick to “mushroom” or produce a large black clump on the wick.

As with all candles, please follow the warning label.  Safety first!  The first burn is the most important. To begin, candles should burn one hour for every 1 inch in diameter of the actual candle size. Therefore, a Soyful Aromas candle should burn initially for 3-4 hours in order to liquefy the entire top layer of wax.  It is recommended that candles are not burned longer than 4 hours at a time.

Keeping the wick trimmed to 1/4 of an inch at all times helps control the amount of “fuel” or wax that is present. By keeping the amount of fuel limited, the flame will create ideal complete combustion where carbon particles are absorbed by the flame. This means less soot is formed, no smoke, and a the maximum amount of scent while the candle is burning.  Loose wick trimmings can be a fire hazard, so please make sure you remove any debris before lighting your candle.

Instead of blowing out your candle, place the lid back on top and this will smother the flame causing it to go out without creating smoke.  If your candle did not come with a lid, you can use a ceramic saucer (something that is flame resistant) or a wick dipper, to dip the wick into the wax and then pull it back out.

Soy wax has a “memory burn” so for the first burn, light your candle and let it burn long enough to create a top liquid pool of wax that reaches the outer edge of the container.  This takes about an hour per inch in diameter of the container. The next time you burn your candle, it will “remember” to burn outwards to the edge versus burning down in the middle.

Aroma Shots are wax melts.  They are 1oz souffle cups filled with scented soy wax.  Rather than light a candle and have to be mindful about an open flame, wax melts can be a great alternative.  Here’s how to use Aroma Shots: 1. Gently squeeze the container around the brim & gently push up from the bottom to pop the wax out  2. Place wax in a wax warmer  3. As the wax melts the aroma will begin to fill your space.  NOTE:  Wax will not burn away like a candle.  When the scent is gone, discard the wax.  To discard the wax wait until it has cooled and then pop it out of the warmer and discard.  NEVER pour wax down the drain.
